Theodore Sterling and Associates
Big Tobacco's ties to Elia Sterling of Theodore D. Sterling & Associates Ltd. and to his father, the firm's founder, go back at least as far as 1968-69. The tobacco industry paid for Sterling and Associates' studies on ventilation, later used to promote the "ventilation solution" over smokefree measures.
How Theodore D. Sterling and Associates serves Big Tobacco:
- On demand or by proposal, generates "studies" for Big Tobacco, even attacking evidence that secondhand smoke is dangerous.
Example: In 1997, Elia Sterling received $87,000 for a research proposal titled "Critically Review the Major Currently Used Mathematical Models of Environmental Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Risk."
- Represents the tobacco industry's perspective, and that of their gambling industry fronts, in ASHRAE committees.
- For a fee, testifies for the defense in secondhand smoke-related litigation.
- Testifies in favor of Big Tobacco's positions in OSHA hearings.
